Grooming Table needed
Hi, just wondering if anyone might know of a 2nd hand grooming table for sale at a reasonable price.
We have a Maltese x Westie who is in need of regular clipping, and am hoping to do it myself
So if anyone has any suggestions, tips etc I would be most appreciative
thank you

Re: Grooming Table needed
Hello i am a proud owner of a maltese cross and a poodle i groom them myself once you get the hang of the clippers simple pet trims are easy.
Do you already have clippers if not try wahl show pro i found them great when i started out and they come with a dvd filled with tips. heres there web page:
http://www.wahl.com.au/content/view/23/23/
always have a sharp pair of scissors avalable it makes life a lot eaisier.
and dont worry if it isn't perfect at first i know i wasn't..
what i found helpfull was to get the groomer to groom the dog then i was able to follow the line of trims.
as for the table:
http://www.dogzonline.com.au/classifieds/forsale.asp?cat=4
they often have handy things avalable.
good luck

Re: Grooming Table needed
HI There!
If you can't find a table, you might consider just getting an arm. They can be clamped on most any table.
Does your dog have more wiry Westie hair or more fine Maltese hair?
If it's more Westie, a pair of thinning shears will help with the head.
Beth, good for you grooming your poo!!

Excellent idea... and they would be cheaper and you would probably find you will need this anyway.

Thank you
Excellent advice about the grooming arm, I have looked on ebay, so that may be the easiest way to go, he is only young, so will certainly need a "noose" around him (his neck) LOL
Re the Hair type:
Bailey has more of the Maltese hair, so which tool would suit him best
I have just been using the scissors and thinners, is this enough?
I've seen lots of talk about shedding tools etc, but have no idea what these are for or how to use them
I have owned Maltese for years, but never taken on the task of a full groom - could get very interesting
thanks again for all the advice, it really is nice to be able to come here and get assistance

Re: Grooming Table needed
HI again!
If Bailey has more Maltese hair you shouldn't need a shedding tool, you could ruin his coat. A regular comb should be the last step in his grooming to be sure all knots are out.
Happy grooming! The most important thing is no nonsense on the table!!
Beth, I think our blade sises are different here, never heard of a # 2!
Do you do the fancy topknots on your Maltese?? My fave part, cute little bows and things

Re: Grooming Table needed
It is a very warm Spring he he.
We dont get all those pretty falling leaves here.
The coldest it really gets in winter is 15 at night and 19-20 in the day

Re: Grooming Table needed
How's the rain situation there, I know it was a bad drought for awhile.. still going on?
my hubby LOVES his leaf blower, It's soooo annoying, he blows the leaves out of the trees sometimes.. People drive by and see him.. I get asked, "What was Michael doing????"

Re: Grooming Table needed
Lori beth lives in the tropical part of Australia which is the North and I am in the South which is cooler. Our winter tempratures ranged from 6 degrees celcius to about 16 on a goood day overnight tempratures can drop as much to 0 or below. As for rain what is that stuff? We dont have it all that often. So send us some please. Yes the northern hemisphere is now into Autumn and the southern is now Spring.

We clip Herbie ourselves ...
As he very near the ground he gets very messy on his undercarriage and also in the warm weather he get very hot ..so we give him a clip he loves it and just stands there while we do it

Now that would make life alot easier him standing there. My sisters dog a maltese shih tzu cross growls and carries on he hates it. But the girl that clips him regularly just ignores it and he shuts up after awhile. He really is a grumpy little bugger Kostya

Re: Grooming Table needed
Yes but you try nail clipping ...he lets JJ do it but the vet...no way..his nails grow very quickly and he has dark ones and it is very hard to see the quick of the nail and so they never get cut very short..
When he was about 1year old we took him to the nurse to have his nails clipped she decided she couldn't manage and in the end they muzzled him and there were three of them holding him...we change our vet after that

Re: Grooming Table needed
I would have changed vets as well what a traumatic experience for poor herbie. Mine are good with their nail cutting Mali doesn't particularly like it but Hilary will just sit there quietly.

Re: Grooming Table needed
Herbiedog, turn his foot upside down, then look at the nail to see if there is sort of a hollow, all that you can safely cut off.
If nails are touching the ground when a dog is standing naturally, chances are it will affect his foot structure by pushing tendons and such.
if the dog absolutely hates nail trimming you can try a rasp.
