Biscuit's frist obeidence trial Empty Biscuit's frist obeidence trial

Post by Yacket's Mum Tue Sep 08, 2009 5:55 pm

Well last night I went to our general meeting at obeidence and the head instructor told me that she was entering me in the very frist class of obeidence trialing in November..... I just about had a heart attack.... I am no way ready and Biscuit well.....................His recall stinks... One day he will do it the next half a dozen he plays zoomies! So I think I am in for some doggie boot camp in the next couple of months. I have been told that all is on lead until the recall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Think I might put chicken in my pockets so he will come to me?????? ( I know not allowed but a good thought)

It is very strange because I have just order a pink collar and lead set for him (I know he is a boy but our club colours are black pink and white and he is black and white so pink it was) and also ordered a arm number holder for just incase we trial........and then all of a sudden I am going to have to use them!

I am totally scared out of my wits I have no idea what I am doing but I guess if we have fun with it that is all that matters.

So will keep you all posted on progress at Biscuit's doggie boot camp.

good luck. Angel has the best recall .... at obedience training that is lol go down the beach and she has selective hearing. Angel sit and stays and I will walk away so far away and she sits patiently waiting then I give her the command and she bolts towards me then skids to a sit. Its funny to watch you dont need to say a word to her.
But yes I always have that sneaky liver treat in my pocket... labs and their food hey lol.
Good luck Biscuit you will have fun

Good luck its ten minutes of pure stress won't lie to you have trialled in the past but so much fun. You will be fine.... looking forward to hearing how you go and besides just remember it's only a trial you blow it there are plenty more where they came from. Wish I could be there to offer you moral support. Do you know if any greys have obedience titles in QLD? You could be the first.

Thanks guys for your support. I have had a shocking week with people telling me Biscuit will become dog aggressive becasue he nips dogs when he runs and plays with them and then another told me he would have be pts by now if he was a race dog becasue he is hard work and another said I had to get a behavioourset out to him at $350 for 2 hours to get on top of him or he will never make anything but trouble for me..... This has all had me in tears as I love the little monkey heaps and yes he is hard work but so are other dogs that have been abused before we can along..... I spoke to our head trainer and she put me straight and I have gone back to basics with him and he is doing much better...recall still stinks but I have to do more work and he is only 16months old so we have lots of time.

I am not sure how many greyhounds have titles and can understand why but I am going to do the best I can and if that means we get one....one day than that would be great if not as long as he is having fun we will keep doing it...

Sorry for the rant and we have a big enough house if anyone every needs a place to stop over...would love to have you.

You are most welcome to come and stay anytime you like. Even your fur kids if they like greyhounds!

I am trying really hard not to take on what people say to me about him because they don't know him and what he has been through and how far he has come and I am really proud of him. I would never dream of telling someone what they should do with there dog and even when we were rehoming greyhounds it was a case of if you want to do that then that is up to you and you will have to live with the outcome of your decission he/she is your dog.

I might just take you up on that offer of a chat minifoxiesgsd very soon.

Yesterday I decided to organise doggie boot camp for me and Biscuit so our wonderful training is going to start doing home lessons with us starting thursday. I am so excited to have the one on one as it is quiet hard with a class to get issues ironed out and I want to at least have most of obeidence down packed before our frist trial so I don't look like a complete tool!

Just remember your foot work and hand signals and that you dont touch the dog in anyway when you enter the ring. Always wait for the judge to tell you what to do. DO NOT act on your own behalf this will all take points off your score. Just know your foot work and hand signals make sure your heeling is work is neat and that he is close to you etc and you will be fine. Do not allow nerves to play a part of it either and listen for the judge you miss their commands and your stuffed. Most of all enjoy yourself trialling is fun!! I would love to be able to be there to support you. Oh and your left hand carry the lead and hold it against your belly that way you can't use it for any other reason then use your right hand for signals. Good luck just practice your foot work... Also be aware that while an excercise is being done you CANNOT praise your dog at anytime, until the judge says excercise finished or over then you can praise but never before it is judged as a second command. More points off...

Wow lots to remember but we are pretty good with the lead.. Not so good with being quite....so we will have to work on that and I treat train him so we are going to slowly stop that as we can't use treats. I am also going deaf (well pretty sure can't hear hubby most of the time) so I am going to have to let the judge know to yell instructions for me as I can't hear quite people or with lots of noise around. Brooke is wonderful trainer we have her on monday nights but I am getting private lessons to get me up to scratch.... I am trying to remember that this is all fun and we will get better as we both learn. I wish you could make it up would love to have the support, hubby is coming with me as I also have to steward and scribe that day as well and we don't want Biscuit left alone all day in a crate unsupervised! Do you know how long a trial is per person? I guess it will feel like for ever.

The whole process takes about ten minutes then you have to go back for your group stays... tell the judge that you are hard of hearing when you enter the ring or the stewart they will tell them. That way she will understand. If your scribing make sure you hear your call or you will miss out. For a first trial I would not be doing anything but being with my dog. Do not make the mistake of over doing it on the day give him a short work out and that is it!! I never fed my dogs the day before a trial or a dog show I found they work better on a empty stomach. Also take him for a gently stroll before you go in as you dont want him to poop or wee in the ring. More points off. There is lots to remember but I am sure this will not be your last trial so you will get more practice. Good luck...

Well last night at obeidence we had a mock trial for me and Biscuit........well we are hopeless.....lolol....have alot of work I had been doing the drop signal to far accross and right to the ground and that is all wrong so we are relearning that and I want him to drop on voice command as I think that will be easier and he gets really excited when we do fast pace and I never knew that I step into him to even him up when he sits....hmmmm got into trouble for that one! so I am really glad I have booked a personal trainer to HELP me. Doggie boot camp starts thursday 3.30pm.......Thanks everyone for you encourgement it means alot and I am just taking it as we go and will be working as hard as we can especially on recalls to the sit in front......!

I am just entering for experience and he is young we have plenty of time and if we never get places that is ok to as he is out and about and getting we socialised with other dogs and people so that is all I can hope for. Still I think I am getting a little excited even if we are terrible. I sent off all his paper work yesterday to become a member and to register him so looking forward to that arriving.

Update. We had our frist personal training session yesterday and we found out that I walk to slow and Biscuit is not focused. So we are doing focus work this week and he has a solid stand while I walk away and around and a perfect stand for exam and his sits need to straighten up and drop is very lazy but all in all I think that went well. I also step into him when he sits so I am in the right place...nononono...must not do that heheheheh.. So I have squeeky toy focus sessions with him all week and to walk faster and not waddle!

Ok Two weeks to go until trial day! We are doing ok with the personal training at home and have just found out we are number 8 of 12 so that is alittle scarry. I am freaking out just thinking of it! Providing I can get him to focus we might do ok if not we will be hopeless...heheheh...Just alittle worried on group stay and drop as the ring accross from us has jumpers in it and they go nuts and Biscuit really wants to go play with them...lolololololo It is all a learning curve so will keep you posted with what happens.
